District of Distinction Applications Open!


  
ISCA is pleased to announce the 2020 District of Distinction Applications are now available on the ISCA website. Applications are due December 15, 2019, and 2020 recipients will be announced during National School Counseling Week in February 2020.
ISCA District of Distinction is recognition for K-12 school districts in Iowa who are implementing comprehensive school counseling programs which address the career, academic, and social-emotional development of all students.

NPSI Iowa!! Time is running out to apply!!

TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO APPLY!!! APPLICATIONS DUE MAY 31!!
AEA PREP is excited to host a 2-day workshop for district teams in partnership with the National Postsecondary Strategy Institute (NPSI) from Chicago, to be held at Des Moines Area Community College on September 23 & 24, 2019. The goal of this workshop is to help school districts develop their internal capacity to support every student toward attaining a successful postsecondary pathway. This will be done through a hands-on, action-oriented workshop focused on the integration of three critical components: a district postsecondary framework and strategy; a data strategy; and engagement of school counselors as leaders. Up to 27 district teams (3 per AEA) will be selected from across the state following the application period (May 3 - May 31).  NPSI is led by Greg Darneider, Dr. Joyce Brown, and Kelly Sparks. Mr. Darneider served as Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Education on the College Access Initiative, serving under President Obama's 2020 Goal and was the U.S. Department of Education representative on First Lady Michelle Obama's Reach Higher Initiative.  Dr. Brown is president of Joyce V. Brown Consulting, a group of expert practitioner counselor leaders who specialize in training and coaching counselors and non-profit organizations working on the front lines of schools. Dr. Brown also provided technical support and served as a consultant to Reach Higher. Ms. Sparks is CEO of Maple Grove Objective, which helps organizations strategically use data to improve outcomes for youth and communities. She has over 20 years of experience in education and is a national expert and innovator in data strategy.

What is the Youth Advisory Board? 
The first ever Youth Advisory Board for Please Pass the Love will consist of 20 members (high school - age 22) across the state of Iowa. Members will be dedicated to improving youth and school mental health for everyone.

Sounds cool! What do I do?
  • Collaborate with Please Pass the Love to influence youth programming 
  • Offer insight to Please Pass the Love staff on what's happening in your school
  • Help plan our annual Youth Summit in Spring of 2020
  • Attend mandatory training August 8th, 9am-4pm
  • Attend once a month, virtual trainings on the first Wednesday of each month, 6:30-8pm starting in September

Registration is now open for the summer 2019 Iowa College & Career Readiness Academy. Two courses will be offered from June 3 to August 5:

101: FOUNDATIONS OF COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS IN IOWA
Provides an overview of the current state of college and career readiness in Iowa for all participants. Prerequisite for all other College & Career Readiness Academy courses. (2 credits)

201: CREATING IOWA’S COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS CULTURE
Focuses on the distinct yet interrelated roles of teachers, school counselors, and administrators in creating the systems that support a college and career readiness culture; includes emphases on equity and utilizing district plans. Prerequisite: 101. (3 credits)
