Former First Lady Michelle Obama is committed to helping students reach higher by completing their education past high school. She will continue to celebrate College Signing Day to recognize the hard work of students who pursue and complete their postsecondary education, whether at a two-year school, four-year university, or through an industry recognized credential. Mrs. Obama will celebrate on May 5th, and she encourages you to celebrate with your students, too. During the webinar, Reach Higher will share its toolkit to help you host a college signing day in your community.

Presenter: Eric Waldo
As Executive Director of Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative, Waldo is working to inspire every student in the U.S. to take charge of their future by completing their post-secondary education, whether at a professional training program, a community college, or a 2-year or 4-year college or university. His role cuts across policy, advocacy, and community engagement to further the goal that the U.S. once again leads the world in terms of college graduates. After leaving the White House, Waldo has moved over to the non-profit, Civic Nation, where he continues to lead Mrs. Obama's college access and completion initiative as the Executive Director of Reach Higher and the Executive Vice President for Education. Prior to joining the first lady's staff, Eric served as Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S Department of Education for Secretary Arne Duncan.  He earned a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School, an M.Ed. from Harvard University, and an A.B. from Brown University

Research Study Participants Needed!

Dear School Counselor Colleague:
If you are/were a school counselor who has supervised at least one internship student you are eligible to participate in this dissertation research study. The primary investigator for the study will be, Tracy Peed, a former professional school counselor at North Boone High School in Illinois and Doctoral Candidate in Counselor Education and Supervision at Northern Illinois University. This study will explore how clinical supervision training and professional years of experience in the field are related to school counselor site supervisor self-efficacy and professional identity. The aim is to better understand how these factors, all seemingly important in some capacity to engagement in clinical supervision intersect. Furthermore, a hope is that the research will uncover levels of training and professional experience where supervisor self-efficacy and professional identity are at their peak. This study will further clarify what is known about school counselor clinical supervision and identify areas for improvement in school counselor clinical supervision training.
Please share your experiences via this 20 minute online survey by clicking http://bit.ly/2lkXVyYBe assured that your answers will be used only for scholarly purposes and will be kept completely confidential. Your participation is critical to the success of this project. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Northern Illinois University #HS17-0101.

Future Plans

Please be aware of this career assessment and planning tool. It is not on the approved list from the Dept of Education for the Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP), however, I did want to pass this on...

I wanted to pass on additional information on our career assessment and planning tool called Future Plans ®, which was created by the Pinellas Education Foundation.
Future Plans® is a self-administered self-awareness and career exploration program designed to help students discover and understand their aptitudes and abilities, interests, and work preferences. The program also helps students align their skills with educational pathways to in-demand and globally competitive careers.  Comprehensively, Future Plans® has four major objectives:
•    Students choose postsecondary educational pathways that match aptitudes, values, and interests for in-demand sectors;
•    Students leave high school with an informed and individualized educational plan;
•    School counselors use information from the individualized career plan to better assist students and parents on high school course requirements and career planning;
•    Parents/guardians become more involved and informed about educational and career pathways for their children.
We are having an Informational Webinar on April 20th, 2pm-2:30pm Eastern (1pm-1:30pmCentral) with a live Q & A.  If you would like to learn more information about Future Plans, please click here to register: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/rt/6408628148575841026

Transgender Rights

Rights of transgender students in Iowa, since a civil rights law passed in 2007, continue to require Iowa schools to allow students to use bathrooms or locker rooms and address students by the names and pronouns of the gender with which they identify. Despite the Trump administration recently rescinding protections for transgender students, an Iowa Department of Education spokeswoman said last week, "Truly, nothing changes for [Iowa] schools."
