Des Moines Public Schools invites you to a attend a very special event designed to improve school climate and culture through professional development, skill building and application of the best practices and research.

This August 8-9, learn how this can make a difference in your classrooms and schools. Hear first-hand from several experts on how to put this into practice.

The conditions in which students learn and school staff work are directly linked to outcomes. The Summit on School Climate and Culture has been prepared to help you and your students benefit by this approach.

This two-day event is designed to improve school climate and culture through professional development, skill building and application of the best practices and research. 

A series of workshops, speeches and breakout sessions will focus on key areas, such as:

  • Cultural Proficiency
  • Social and Emotional Health
  • Stakeholder Engagement
Nationally-recognized experts will be speaking and leading workshops throughout the Summit.

DMPS is honored to host experts from across the country at this event to give speeches, make presentations and lead workshops, including Erin Gruwell. Gruwell is a teacher, an education activist, and the founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation. She created the Freedom Writer Methods, a progressive teaching philosophy and curricula designed to achieve excellence from all students. By fostering an educational philosophy that values and promotes diversity, Gruwell transformed her students' lives. The work for the Freedom Writers has received attention around the world.
