The morning will bring us keynote speakers Keynote Speaker-Mark Weist, Ph.D and Ryan Klingensmith, Founder of Shape The Sky
Mark D. Weist received a Ph.D. is currently a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Carolina. Mark will review national movements of school mental health (SMH) programs and services and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). He will review strategies for best practice in SMH, with programs reflecting a shared agenda involving schools, mental health staff, staff from other systems (e.g., juvenile justice, child welfare), and youth and families working collaboratively to improve depth, quality, and positive impact of programs and services. Mark will discuss present background on a National Community of Practice on Collaborative School Behavioral Health, and experiences in other communities and states in advancing SMH and connecting these efforts to PBIS. Discussion will include themes of needs assessment and resource mapping, evidence-based practice, family and youth engagement and empowerment, quality assessment and improvement, evaluation and scaling up. Resources and relevant initiatives will be reviewed.
Ryan has been working with children and teenagers with mental health concerns since 1994. He is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and is a nationally certified counselor (NCC). He currently works as an outpatient therapist and a Prevention Specialist at Addiction Medicine Services at WPIC, UPMC. Life for a teenager is vastly different than it was ten years ago. This presentation defines categories of social networking that teacher and parents should be aware of and listening for with their students and children. Ryan will review image boards, untraceable texting/sexting, internet predators, gossip/ rumor spreading sites, video chatting, blogs, eating disorders, self-harm and suicide. Teens and Tweens today have an unlimited access to information, apps and websites that can be wonderfully helpful, but also lead to concerning behaviors if parents and educators don’t have the knowledge to teach young people how to behave responsible in this new cyber-playground. knowledge. And knowledge is power, so they say.
The afternoon will be filled with a multitude of workshops given by experts in a variety of areas including but not limited to: mental health across cultures, strategies for behavior in the classroom, Suicide Prevention, LGBTQ mental health, art therapy, Youth Mental Health First Aid, bullying, building resiliency, and a panel of parents of children with mental health needs. You will also be treated to a light breakfast, a wonderful lunch, and an expo of community services available to spoil you!
